XMM-Newton Finds the Most Distant Quasar

The European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-Ray observatory has discovered what is believed to be the most distant quasar ever discovered.

Quasars are the most luminous known objects in the Universe - they can emit 1000 times the energy of our entire Galaxy, from a size no larger than our solar system. The targeted quasar, SDSS 1044-0125, has a redshift of 5.80, which means it was present only 1 billion years after the Big Bang.
