Comet News: C/1998 U3 (Jager)

IAU Circular 7038 (Oct. 25, 1998) reports the discovery of a comet by Michael Jager (east of Vienna) on 16- and 9-min Technical Pan film exposures. The comet is about 12th magnitude.

A preliminary parabolic orbit reported on IAU Circular 7040 (October 27, 1998) indicates that perihelion will occur on Dec. 9, 1998 at a distance of 2.7 AU. The circular points out that this comet is probably of short-period. Based on the published orbit, the comet will remain a well-placed Northern Hemisphere object and should brighten about 0.5 magnitude by December. The comet will then slowly fade as it moves south.
